The United States has maybe for the first time in our history a leadership vacuum. It seems that we have lost our way, and our current leaders, be it politicians from either party, all levels of government, industry the military and yes the church. From the very beginnings of this nation our leaders understood that we had to trust upon the one and only living God to help lead, guide and show us the way to overcome our difficulties.
In September of 1774, the men who would become the Founding Fathers of the United States of America met in Philadelphia for the first Continental Congress, with representatives from the thirteen colonies. The date was September 7, 1774 when Jacob Duche arrived before the Continental Congress. He read several Prayers in the established form and then read the Psalter for the 7th of September which was the 35th Psalm. Adams writes to Abigail “you must remember this was the next morning after we had heard of the cannonade of Boston.” He then added, “it seemed as if Heaven had ordained that Psalm to be read on that morning.” Adams went on to say “After this, Mr. Duche unexpectedly to everybody, struck out into extemporary Prayer, which filled the bosom of every man present… It had excellent effect upon every body here.”
From these humble beginnings to this current time we as a nation have come to expect our leaders to seek Godly council concerning the affairs of the nation.
Where Is the Leadership?
At a time when sound judgement and leadership is needed, when the nation is divided, confused and weary, where is the leadership. It’s very hard to see, hear anyone speaking truth, someone sharing the message of hope. We must come together and seek the Lord, the church of the most high God, be sound the alarm. We must follow the example of the past in order to have a better future.
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
We elect political leaders in the hope that they will make sound judgements to benefit the American people. The President’s oath of office reads:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”
Where Is the Leadership?
Thou there is no official oath of office for our spiritual leaders, my personal favorite of choice would be:
Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all long suffering and teaching. 2 Tim 4:2
Spiritual leadership begins with the reverent fear of God. Acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and savior. This allows the individual to seek Godly council to lead the people.
Solomon was a wise king, a leader of his people. Solomons wise leadership was because he ask God for help. I believe we need to be asking for God’s help also. “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 1 Kings 3:7
Many want to frame the issues in our society as Right against Left, Black against White, Rich against the poor. All of that is just propaganda, fake news intended to keep America divided and from recognizing the truth!
This is a battle between good and evil, and daily it’s become clearer that evil is losing and that truth will triumph. That is why we see such great upheaval around us the enemy sees also the the end is near. We need to pray for our leaders and ask God’s hand in the affairs of our nation.
Support truth, support leaders that support truth. Pray for Godly leaders, and for those that may not be follows of Christ, first for their salvation and then for them to be surrounded by Godly council.
Just as Daniel and the three Hebrew boy’s were Godly councilors for Nebuchandezzar a ungodly king, so also we need the same today. The battle for change is going to be won in political rallies, the ballet box or the court rooms important as all these things are.
